Character Background and Description Zhou Fu-in is a teenager working on his parents rice farms near the Imperial city. While he is too young to be conscripted, he wants to join the war and defend his homeland. However he doesn't just want to be a soldier, he wants to be a Saburashi. Unfortunately for him, both being almost an adult and being a lower class peasant has made that goal nearly impossible for him. He doesn't let this stop him however. He takes his own time to spar, train and teach himself many skills such as archery, having saved up his own money to purchase his own hunting bow. He used to speak to Nakijima, the Saburashi constable of his village until the war called him away. Nakijima, while feeling bad about giving the boy false hope did take the time to teach the boy much about what it takes to be a Saburashi. In Zhou's mind, he would join up and prove himself a skilled warrior enough to get him noticed and perhaps given an exception. He avoids saying this out loud as many have repeatedly told him the odds of this happening are nearly impossible.
Zhou is incredibly dedicated to whatever he puts his mind to, he is up at 4 to train before working with his parents and siblings in the fields, then at the end of the day it's back to more training. He feels that there is so much more he could do in the world yet class restrictions and traditions have forced him to be trapped where he is, unable to do anything about it. He dreams of making some big success on the battlefield and being promoted to a great Saburashi general. He tells his younger siblings he'll move them into a mansion in the city when he achieves this, telling them all he wants to accomplish when he grows up. Having not seen the war up close, he glorifies it in his mind like the tales of great heroes vanquishing the enemy against impossible odds. His parents have since given up telling him that what he hears in stories isn't like the real world and just hope that he realizes it on his own before it's too late.
